It’s sweet summertime which means it’s the perfect time to start off your day with a sweet, cold, and healthy breakfast. With so many scrumptious smoothie bowl ideas out there, we thought we’d share Rowdy’s favorite gut-healthy breakfast idea with you—the Chocolate Coconut Cashew Acai Bowl Recipe!

 

Starting Your Day Off Right 

You’ve probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And it’s true! A high protein breakfast that’s full of healthy ingredients has so many amazing benefits. In fact, studies have linked a healthy morning breakfast to better memory and concentration throughout the day, as well as lower cholesterol and a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, and high blood sugar.

Your body has fasted for probably 8+ hours when you wake up in the morning, and it’s starving for nutrients. Making a nutrient-dense, healthy breakfast replenishes those nutrients as well as kick-starts your metabolism and gets your brain and muscles ready to go for the day.

So are smoothie bowls a healthy option for a morning meal? Mmm, absolutely! And they’re super delicious too! Our healthy acai bowl recipe is loaded with antioxidants, prebiotics, and probiotics, making it a gut-healthy morning booster. And what’s better than a colorful and creative breakfast filled with acai on a sun-filled summer morning?

The Benefits of Acai

The acai berry, pronounced ‘ah-sigh-EE’, actually isn’t technically a berry at all—it’s a drupe. A drupe is a fruit that has one central pit instead of many small seeds like berries do. Some other drupes are plums, cherries, apricots, and peaches.

The word “acai” means “fruit that cries” which comes from the fact that the fruit is fragile and perishable and is made up of so much water. This dark purple drupe is from the acai palm tree which comes from the rainforests of South America. Because they grow so far away, fresh acai is usually hard to get. Unless you live in Brazil and happen to have a beautiful acai palm tree growing in your backyard (lucky you!), then you can generally only buy frozen acai or acai powder. 

No biggie for us though! We love using frozen acai in our power breakfast bowl. And some of our favorite puree packs are frozen immediately after being picked so all of those good-for-you nutrients are preserved for our guts. 

So why is acai the main ingredient in many clean eating smoothie bowls? Because of its many health benefits. Acai is rich in antioxidants, meaning the fruit has anti-inflammatory health benefits. It can help reduce stress, boost immunity, and detoxify the body. The superfood fruit is also rich in gut-healthy nutrients like fiber, protein, and healthy fats.

Chocolate Coconut Cashew Acai Bowl Recipe

Our favorite probiotic and prebiotic breakfast is jammed packed with superfoods and deliciousness! Check out this healthy breakfast recipe and start off your summer morning right.


Chocolate Coconut Cashew Acai Bowl

1 (100g) packet of unsweetened, frozen acai

1 frozen banana

¼ greek yogurt

1 small splash of water


Toppings:

1 Chocolate Coconut Cashew Rowdy Bar, chopped into ½ inch pieces

Fresh raspberries

Coconut flakes

Dark chocolate chips

A drizzle of honey or yacon root syrup (optional)


Directions: Blend frozen acai, frozen banana, greek yogurt, and a splash of water in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour the smoothie in a bowl. Top with chopped Chocolate Coconut Cashew Rowdy Bar, raspberries, coconut flakes, and dark chocolate chips. Then drizzle with either honey or yacon root syrup to sweeten things up a bit, if desired. Enjoy!
